A Reader Wonders about Ketosis and Bile Deficiency

[A reader on The Keto Rash Facebook Community wonders about the relationship between Keto Rash and bile acid deficiency.  There isn’t any relationship that I’ve come across in my research between the rash and bile acids except that bile acids are heavily involved in the metabolism of cholesterol, and cholesterol metabolism can be altered with ketogenic diets.

I can’t say that I know much about the work of Dr. Eric Berg who this person follows, but a quick perusal of his site shows that he’s a chiropractor who develope the ‘Body Type System of Weight Loss.’  That’s about as far as I let myself go down this particular rabbit hole.Read More

AA Gets Keto Rash After Doing Strict Keto And Losing 8% Body Fat

[AA is attempting to lose body fat by going keto and found that this brought on the keto rash.  I’ve made some grammatical edits to his original message.]

Hey. Just sharing that I’m undergoing a strict keto diet with intermittent fasting to drop body fat percentage.  Been in keto for about a monthish.

I started at 205 lbs and 23% body fat.  I’m currently 189 lbs and 15% body fat.  The rash appeared maybe sooner, but was on my neck and back and I didn’t notice it until it appeared on my chest.… Read More

Heath Gets Keto Rash From Exogenous Ketones

[Heath reached out to me on Facebook to share his experience getting Keto Rash after using exogenous ketones in the form of Keto/OS Packets from Pruvit.

My immediate thought was that perhaps this was an allergic reaction to something in the supplement because if its distribution, however the fact that it improved with carbs really favor it being Keto Rash.

As you can tell from what he says, Heath is experienced with keto and has done it in the past without any issues, which is why it’s fascinating to see that he only gets the rash when he uses these packets.  Read More

After trying almost everything, Sharon finally finds relief with increasing her carbs

[If you’ve been following this site, this is now a familiar story.  Person goes low carb, gets rash, tries all sorts of creams and pills to treat the rash to no avail, only to find that increasing their carbs will do the trick.  I am surprised that antibiotics didn’t help Sharon though, although I wonder if she took oral antibiotics or used topical antibiotic creams/ointments.  Sharon shared this on The Keto Rash Facebook Page.]

Hi everyone.

I’ve been reading up on other instances of Keto rash wherever I can find it on the Internet and just thought I would share my experience.… Read More

SP finds relief with Turmeric and CoQ10

[SP Posted this on The Keto Rash Facebook pageWhile I’ve tried turmeric before, the one I like is Thorne Research’s Meriva, a formulation that binds curcumin (the active ingredient of turmeric) to a phytosome for enhanced absorption, I personally didn’t find it helpful with keto rash when I had it.  I haven’t tried the CoQ10 before, so that may be something to explore if/when the rash returns.]

So I got keto rash on my back and between my breasts. I exercise daily and it started to spread rapidly.… Read More

Christina, Another Korean American, gets Keto Rash

[While not having any pictures of the rash, Christina’s description of the rash and it’s distribution is very convincing for keto rash.  Of course the only way to actually tell is to increase carb intake for bit to see how the rash responds. ]

Hello Philip.

I ran across your blog and your Facebook page a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to comment on the page but wasn’t sure if it would show up in my friends’ timeline. So I had planned on sending you a message but didn’t know what exactly I wanted to say lol.… Read More

Ruth Is Misdiagnosed With A Food Allergy, Turns Out It’s Keto Rash

[In perhaps one of the most pleasantly detailed e-mail exchanges I’ve had with a reader of this blog, Ruth shares her experience with the Keto Rash and how it was initially misdiagnosed as a food allergy when she saw a doctor.

The rash popped up for her after she began eating a low carb version of the Whole 30 program which is a diet I was also following at the time (If you’d like to know more about the Whole 30, I wrote a summary of the diet here).Read More

Case Report of the Keto Rash in the journal: Pediatric Dermatology

The Pediatric Dermatology journal published a case report of the keto rash, prurigo pigmentosa, in their March-April 2015 issue:

Prurigo pigmentosa after a strict ketogenic diet.

This was a report of a 17 year old kid who developed a rash and joint pains.  They thought he had something called dermatomyositis which involves inflammation of the skin and muscle, and treated him with intravenous steroids.  This only helped his joint pains, but his rash remained.

Steroids Did Not Help

The ineffectiveness of steroids is typical of keto rash.… Read More
