A Reader’s Experience Treating Keto Rash with Doxycycline

In the comments section of the BJJ Caveman keto rash page a reader named John wrote:

I had no reoccurrence of the rash after taking Doxycycline for 11 days without any change in my diet 9 months ago (see above and be aware of rare but possible severe side effects affecting mood). In order to avoid antibiotic-associated diarrhea I took Saccharomyces boulardii together with the antibiotic.

I now do intermittent fasting daily throughout the work-week without any problems. My longest fast was 36 hours.

Maybe Doxycycline wipes out certain types of gut bacteria that can proliferate extremely well under the conditions of ketosis, but not otherwise and produce a substance that causes the rash.

“What are your thoughts on Keto rash and it’s causes or processes. It’s not everyone, so why some and not the others. Is that genetic? And is the only cure carb consumption. It would seem as though waiting it out as if it were a detoxing mechanism is risky, as it can cause scarring.”

Prurigo Pigmentosa: A Clinicopathologic Study of 4 Cases from the Middle East

This was the first case series from the Middle East, out of the American University of Beirut Medical Center, Lebanon.  This article is hot off the presses, just published in the American Journal of Dermatology on July 30, 2014.

SUBJECTS:

  • All 4 patients were female with a mean age of 23.5
  • 3 of the 4 had a history of prior episodes
  • One patient reported an association with the rash and with Ramadan fasting.
