Case Report of the Keto Rash in the journal: Pediatric Dermatology

The Pediatric Dermatology journal published a case report of the keto rash, prurigo pigmentosa, in their March-April 2015 issue:

Prurigo pigmentosa after a strict ketogenic diet.

This was a report of a 17 year old kid who developed a rash and joint pains.  They thought he had something called dermatomyositis which involves inflammation of the skin and muscle, and treated him with intravenous steroids.  This only helped his joint pains, but his rash remained.

Steroids Did Not Help

The ineffectiveness of steroids is typical of keto rash.… Read More

Susan Successfully Treats Keto Rash with Minocycline

There are now over 74 comments now in the Treatments page and in one of the latest comments Susan shares her experience with treating keto rash using the antibiotic minocycline:

I have been dealing with this horrendous and incredibly itchy rash on and off for about 6 years and have seen countless doctors about it. I’ve desperately tried every single thing listed under treatments (and some), but to no avail.

It wasn’t until I came across this site that I found a solution that actually worked!

Samantha Successfully Treats Keto Rash With Doxycycline

Samantha Keto Rash 1

Samantha developed keto rash but didn’t want to stop doing the diet so she opted to go with doxycycline which successfully treated the rash.  She did a wonderful job documenting her experience with photos as you can see.

Here is Samantha:

Around day 9 of keto, I noticed a small rash under my breasts. It wasn’t itchy at first, but it spread VERY quickly and within 3-4 days my chest, neck and some areas of my sides and back were covered in bright red bumps and splotches.

Keto Rash Successfully Treated with Clarithromycin – From A Reader in the UK

Every once in a while I’ll get an e-mail from someone detailing their experiences with the Keto Rash and most of the time they’re willing to let me post their stories.

Here’s one I just received from a reader in the UK describing how she successfully treated her keto rash with an antibiotic.

Hi,

I developed a rash exactly like all the descriptions here (except mine was never itchy) after cutting my carbs down to 20g a day.

It took a few weeks and gradually spread, initially I thought it was a sweat rash (little red dots under the band of my sports bra or the waist of my sport leggings) but it spread across my abdomen, axillary tail areas and the sides of my waist.

Prurigo Pigmentosa vs Confluent and Reticulated Papillomatosis

Prurigo Pigmentosa and CARP

This is just a letter to the editor in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology reporting a single case published in 2013.

Is prurigo pigmentosa an inflammatory version of confluent and reticulated papillomatosis?

The case was of a 24 year old white male with a 2 week history of itchy rash on his back, chest, and abdomen.

He was first treated with both oral and topical corticosteroids to no effect.  A skin biopsy was performed and he was diagnosed with prurigo pigmentosa.

Unfortunately they do not go into potential causes of the rash in this patient (ie fasting, dieting, weight loss, etc.), but since this is a letter to the editor, it’s not subject to the same scientific rigor as regular journal articles.… Read More

The Keto Rash and H. Pylori

PP-H-PyloriNOTE: A version of this was originally published on bjjcaveman.com (here) on September 5, 2014.

This was another paper that caught my attention because of the title which identified a specific organism in the skin biopsy of the prurigo pigmentosa rash.

Identification of Helicobacter pylori in Skin Biopsy of Prurigo Pigmentosa

This was published in the American Journal of Dermatopathology on June of 2012.

This was a 23 year old Chinese man with a history of rash for 3 years.

They performed a skin biopsy from which they were able to isolate the Helicobacter pylori organism. … Read More
