Case Report of the Keto Rash in the journal: Pediatric Dermatology

The Pediatric Dermatology journal published a case report of the keto rash, prurigo pigmentosa, in their March-April 2015 issue:

Prurigo pigmentosa after a strict ketogenic diet.

This was a report of a 17 year old kid who developed a rash and joint pains.  They thought he had something called dermatomyositis which involves inflammation of the skin and muscle, and treated him with intravenous steroids.  This only helped his joint pains, but his rash remained.

Steroids Did Not Help

The ineffectiveness of steroids is typical of keto rash.… Read More

Samantha Successfully Treats Keto Rash With Doxycycline

Samantha Keto Rash 1

Samantha developed keto rash but didn’t want to stop doing the diet so she opted to go with doxycycline which successfully treated the rash.  She did a wonderful job documenting her experience with photos as you can see.

Here is Samantha:

Around day 9 of keto, I noticed a small rash under my breasts. It wasn’t itchy at first, but it spread VERY quickly and within 3-4 days my chest, neck and some areas of my sides and back were covered in bright red bumps and splotches.

A Reader’s Keto Rash Success Story: Jude

Jude[Editor’s Note: This is a guest post from a visitor of the site who wants to go by Jude.  I think its wonderful for folks who have the keto rash to share their experiences for the benefit of others.  We all know how little information there is out there regarding this, so the more cases we can accumulate the better.  Please, if you think this is something you have, I’d encourage you to share your experiences here.  Many of you have done so already in the comments section, which is fantastic. Read More

Keto Rash in 49 Koreans

Keto Rash in 49 KoreansNow this may sound familiar, especially since I just wrote a post on another study where they analyzed the keto rash in 50 koreans, and I myself had to do a double take because this was published in the same year as the other study… but after reading the paper itself, I can reassure that it is a completely separate study.  While the country is the same, the authors are different, the journal is different, and the patients are different (although there may be some overlap, I’ll explain why).… Read More

A Reader’s Experience Treating Keto Rash with Doxycycline

In the comments section of the BJJ Caveman keto rash page a reader named John wrote:

I had no reoccurrence of the rash after taking Doxycycline for 11 days without any change in my diet 9 months ago (see above and be aware of rare but possible severe side effects affecting mood). In order to avoid antibiotic-associated diarrhea I took Saccharomyces boulardii together with the antibiotic.

I now do intermittent fasting daily throughout the work-week without any problems. My longest fast was 36 hours.

Maybe Doxycycline wipes out certain types of gut bacteria that can proliferate extremely well under the conditions of ketosis, but not otherwise and produce a substance that causes the rash.
